A New Album of young musical and fashion rising star JINGJING HAN – Roberta explores Identity, Music, and the Power of Colors
Your clothing style is unique and reflects an avant-garde spirit. How do you see the connection between fashion and music? Do you stylistically incorporate fashion into your performances and music videos?
Music is a language of fashion. I absolutely incorporate fashion into music, I think a great performance is very much related to how we present ourselves on stage, emotionally and stylistically.
Which women, whether musicians or fashion icons, inspire you the most? Following these influences, do you see yourself as a global star, or do you crave more artistic freedom?
Yujia Wang is my all time love. People would often think a pianist should wear a fabulous luxurious dress and somehow “elegantly” sits there and perform. Yujia is a strong woman with a strong mind, the way she presents herself with such high heels and a short dress, this kind of sexiness is the most beautiful and attractive. I see myself as a star, globally or not, this leaves to the public to define. Most importantly, I want to focus on my music, giving my fans more songs to sing along with.
As a model, what excites you more – haute couture fashion shows or expressing yourself through photographic campaigns?
I enjoy expressing myself through photographic campaigns more for sure. I think camera is a mysterious thing, through lens, it captures how I move. Within that moment, time freezes.
How do you plan to balance your career as a model and a musician? Will these two sides intertwine in your future projects?
Good question, I am goal oriented person and so would give myself time to digest both sides of work. I want everyone to see more sides of me, and so I will try my best to make sure I am on top of my work haha! Will one overtake the other, I am not so sure, I think I love them both, and they do help me to understand more of myself, so yeah!
You study biology, but you’re also fashion-conscious. Do you see any connection between fashion and nature? Might we see a bit of nature reflected in your music videos or stage design?
Absolutely, I am huge bio nerd and so would want to stay sensitive to the connections between the two. Camouflage is a great example linking illusion and protection using our powerful tool of color. I love trying different colors of hair as a highlight of my look or represent my interpretation of what I am shooting today. I think what makes nature so powerful is the indescribable beauty behind it. I often think it is amazing that how much “inspiration” is around us, and so be alert of what’s around us is very important. I am preparing my album currently and at this stage, I don’t want to give it away too much haha but it is an album about colors. Stay tuned!
You’ve played piano since you were four years old and moved from China to the UK at eleven. How has living in another culture influenced your style and musical inspiration?
I often describe myself as a gregarious nomad. Having lived in different countries, I am grateful to have experienced different cultures. Therefore, with my style, I am very open to different elements or accessories that would add a little spice to the overall look. Musically, I love trying out different genres and cooperate with different musicians, by doing so, I am able to grow dimensionally.
As someone interested in philosophy, I’m sure you have interesting views on the world. Do you touch on any social themes in your music?
This is a big question haha! I am not qualified enough to say something so grand but my album’s theme is actually dealt with the concept of the “gift”. What qualifies a gift or being gifted is an interesting concept. Why would someone have this “gift” but others don’t? Is the idea of being talented linked with how God decides everyone to be like long way ahead of our conscience? I love to think about these things and so would want to bring these ideas visually.
What is the theme of your first EP, and what do you want your fans to feel when they hear it? Since you’re fluent in Chinese, English, and French, do you plan to release music in all those languages?
It is to do with colors and emotions. I want them to see how different JingJing can be and that through each song, they can see the whole “picture” while hearing it. I want the whole thing to be one piece, but on a micro scale, each song is a story. I am only a story teller and you guys are the real dealers hahah! And yeah, languages wise, why not? I am currently learning Japanese and Korean, and so yes!!!
